Drop-in Creative Space opens in Dandenong

Workshop facilitator Monique McNamara from Working Better Together is performing the “art take-over” of Connection Arts Space and Walker Street Gallery from 7 July-14 July.

“All but two people hadn’t done art in their life. And that’s exactly why I did this.”

An event of this kind had never taken place in Dandenong before, with many of the participants being first-time artists. It marked a significant moment for the local creative community and brought people together in a unique way.

An Unforgettable Evening

One of the program's highlights was the night of 11 July, where attendees experienced a memorable evening combining an Ethiopian dinner, an African drumming workshop, a live podcast interview, and an interactive discussion. The conversations focused on art, cross-cultural identity, and biracial experiences in Australia and Aotearoa, creating a rich and engaging atmosphere for all involved.

Evening at Walker Street Gallery and Arts Centre

The event, which began at 6pm at Walker Street Gallery and Arts Centre, featured renowned African drummer Ousmane Sonko, artist Olana Janfa, and the Being Biracial podcast hosts, Kate Robinson and Maria-Birch Morunga. Guests also enjoyed delicious food from Afro Café, Dandenong, which added to the vibrant atmosphere of the evening.

Creative Space Workshops and Events

The success continued with McNamara’s Wisdom Within Wellbeing creative workshops, held on 12 and 14 July. These sessions provided a space for participants to explore their creativity and connect with one another. In addition, Community Create Sessions, which ran on 12, 13, and 14 July, were well-received by artists of all levels, from beginners to experienced creators.

On 13 July, a coffee meet-up for creative businesses and a dinner for creatives brought people together, fostering collaboration and community spirit. The event series at ‘Creative Space,’ located at Connection Art Space, 9 Walker Street, Dandenong, concluded on 14 July with great success, leaving participants inspired and more connected to the local arts scene.
